Babywearing - "Our Trendsetting Ancestors" by Lisa Sturycz

Do you consider your ancestors to be hip trendsetters? There is a lot to be learned from our ancestors. It seems that every "new" trend these days leads back to a tried and true style of living that a previous generation had already made successful. Babywearing is a trend that has been documented throughout history and has recently been thrown into the spotlight by Hollywood moms and their babies.

Babywearing is so much more than a fashion statement, however. Research has shown that babies who are touched and held gain weight faster and are healthier than babies who are not. Babies in slings also spend more time in the behavioral state called quiet alertness, in which they are most content and best able to interact with his environment. Researchers have even reported that carried babies show enhanced visual and auditory alertness. With all of the benefits to parent and child, and the added bonus of being "the hip mom" what more could you ask for?

The trick to stylish babywearing, as with all other modern day trends, is to give it a "now" factor. With the many hip patterns and designer fabrics available to choose from, a parent can easily find a style that suits their personality. I don't know how many happy parents I have come across that have said, "This is it! I have been looking for just the right pattern. I am so excited to give it a try!"

Babywearing is not only great for your baby, but parents benefit as well. Along with so many other modern day moms out there I must say, finding the time to exercise is not an easy task. Three children, a husband, two jobs and a writing hobby fall directly above exercise on my priority list! But, with my youngest in his sling, I can multitask. I am not only giving him the contact that he needs to thrive, but I am getting other things done as well and giving my body the exercise that it needs.

As my youngest child slowly approaches the day that he outgrows his sling, I can't help but think it will be a sad day when I must pack my favorite accessory away. Until that day, I will make the most of this time and continue to make his sling our special place to hang out together.
