Big City Baby by Grant Carroll
Raising a baby in a big city has been enlightening for me. My wife and I have had many experiences that we want to share with other parents. Before my son was born, we were living in New York City, and I often wrote about what it would be like to have our little one in the big apple. A few days after he was born in our hospital in Manhattan we actually moved right outside of the city in New Jersey. Still, we worked a lot in the city, so we got a good dose of urban child rearing experiences. Here are a few bits of helpful advice I would give to any city dwelling parents.
First of all, make sure your apartment is baby proof and safe. Even though little one won't be crawling around right away, it's never to early to make things safe. One problem I think we had was mold in our bathroom. This can be a problem anywhere you live and is extremely dangerous to everyone, so don't slack on getting this checked. That being said, the biggest concern we had from the beginning in New York were germs. Let's face it, most cities are packed with people that cough, sneeze and spit all over the place. I suggest getting a lot of hand sanitizer wipes and to start the habit of not wearing your shoes in the apartment. Newborns have undeveloped immune systems, so you have to protect them as much as possible. Don't take your little one out for at least 4 weeks. One thing that will boost their immunity is breast milk, too.
Another big challenge we still have is getting around the city with our son. You can take your car in, but then you have to deal with the hassle and cost of parking. We know that many city dwellers don't have cars, so they have to opt for the bus or subway. My advice is to take a stroller with you, but hold your baby while on the bus or train - don't leave them in the stroller. If they cry, it's hard to comfort them and the stroller itself takes up a lot of space and can get you some nasty looks from mean commuters. Just plan for one of you to hold little one and the other to fold and hold the stroller. Speaking of mean commuters and the like, be prepared to cover your child's ears when someone passes by cursing like a sailor. In New York, this happens about every two minutes. Another point is to try to avoid traveling alone with your baby in the city. To say it is a hassle is a gross understatement. Only do this if it's absolutely necessary, like for a doctor's appointment. If you live in a northern city like New York, another issue is fighting the cold during fall and winter. Dress baby in one extra layer than you're wearing and never keep them out for extended periods of time. If it's bitter cold, it's best to not take them out at all. You may battle cabin fever for a while, but spring is always on the way. Raising a baby in the city provides unique challenges, but it can be equally rewarding.
