Designing The Perfect Indoor Nurseries And Playrooms by Anne Clarke

Watch out, because your home playroom or nursery may just become be the play date hot spot where all the coolest toddlers will want to hang out! Despite the many dangers that you have to watch out for when you have a baby (or young children in general) in the house, a playroom can be the safest, and absolutely most fun space in your home - custom designed just for them. From the toys you chose to the walls of the room, you can fill your baby's play place with educational fun! For example: my best friend's daughter loves to be read to. She especially likes to identify colors, objects (such as animals and kinds of vehicles) and sounds as she looks at the illustrated pages. Of course, your baby's first books should be slobber-proof.

Little Lacey's nursery, in addition to the other playthings, has dozens of books for her to enjoy. So my friend decided that her nursery wallpaper should be covered with other things to entertain her daughter's curiosity. She hired professionals to cover the walls with landscapes, animals, underwater scenes and more - the place is painted from wall to wall. Lacey runs around the room pointing to airplanes, ambulances, barn animals, the sun and the moon and the stars. She asks questions, makes plane sounds, animal sounds, and even stories. She has gotten so smart, and she is only just three years old. "The pig is asking the ducks if they want to go swim . . . uh, in the lake because he was scared to swim... but then he learned how to swim," she tells us, matter-of-factly.

My nephew loves to draw, among the many toys in his room, he enjoys the crafts he makes the most. Therefore, just like Lacey's books, he has dozens of craft-making items to work with. He loves cars of all kinds as well, (running a very close second place to art) so my sister and I half- stole my best friend's decor idea and half created our own with my nephew's new nursery.

Some of the walls of Ray's room are decorated with wall paper featuring a plethora of different kinds of cars, trucks, vans, trains and planes. Another wall is completely white, but washes off any washable markers, so she always got the washable ones, and Ray is able to turn his own nursery wall into an art project. "This is his special room," my sister explains, "so he knows he can't draw on any other walls anywhere else. So far it hasn't been a problem."

You can create the greatest nursery or playroom for your kids. As they grow up, observe your kids playing and discover the things they are most interested in. Encourage this kind of play, feed their intellectual interests. As a little girl, I read a book about a pilot, and became incredibly interested in planes and the idea of flying. Even years later when I was home schooled my mother asked us to choose our own science topic and write our own science papers: the topic I chose was aviation. My curiosity about planes was never smothered. I read more and more about flying, I thought about the few times I had flown and pictured looking at the world beneath me right as the plane broke through the white clouds. I thought about how bumpy one landing was and how smooth a different pilot had made the other.

The point is, engaging in your children's interests is often very beneficial. I am not a pilot now, but since discovering the physics involved flight such as lift and drag and speed I became interested in more and more things. I studied literature, philosophy, fine arts, science and much more. Your nursery, in addition to being one of the most important rooms to consider for your home decor, is also an opportunity to enhance your child's ability to discover, create and, explore his or her intellectual curiosity.
